HMD will introduce Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) phones in India, in collaboration with Free Stream Technologies at IIT Kanpur. At the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025, scheduled to take place at the Jio World Centre, Mumbai, the announcement will be made officially.
With Direct-to-Mobile (D2M), content, live TV, video, audio, and text messages can be delivered straight to mobile devices without requiring Wi-Fi or internet connections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Viksit Bharat vision and national initiatives, such as Make in India and Design in India, are aligned with D2M.
Tejas Networks will support D2M technology to power affordable feature phones, smartphones, and tablets. In partnership with IIT Kanpur and Tejas Networks, Prasar Bharati has tested this technology under live network conditions for several years.
With D2M-enabled devices, users can access: keeping you entertained, Broadcasts of sports, Content aimed at education, and notifications of emergencies.
Rather than requiring an active internet connection, the services will be transmitted through terrestrial TV broadcast airwaves.
Following continuous development efforts and successful trials, Nokia considers itself among the first manufacturers ready to offer Direct-to-Mobile capability in India.
