Towards the end of September, Qualcomm is set to introduce its latest top-tier processor, following up on last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite. While many have been referring to it as the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 for now, a fresh tip from sources in China suggests that name might be off the mark.

Apparently, the company could go with the somewhat puzzling Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 instead. If this turns out to be true, it boils down to a couple of factors. For starters, even though the “Gen 5” label seems odd given that the 8 Elite just launched recently, that model was essentially the next step after the 8 Gen 3—making it a “Gen 4” in spirit, if not in name.

Additionally, whispers suggest that Qualcomm plans to introduce a near-premium chip this year, possibly designated as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. This one would slot in just beneath the 8 Elite Gen 5, which helps the overall lineup click into place.

Keep in mind, the 8 Gen 5 stands apart from the 8s Gen 5—it’s a step up from that variant but doesn’t quite hit the heights of the full Elite version. In any case, the purported 8 Elite Gen 5 has already appeared in benchmarks for the forthcoming OnePlus 15.
