After taking a long break from new releases, Jolla—Finland’s innovative mobile tech brand—has unveiled its latest product: the Jolla Phone. Described as an “independent European Do It Together (DIT) Linux phone,” this device highlights Jolla’s commitment to open-source principles and user privacy.

Jolla markets the new phone as an actual Linux experience, running what it calls “real Linux”—not just a variant. While the technical foundation is pure Linux, what users will engage with is Sailfish OS 5, a privacy-centred mobile operating system that Jolla touts as the only one developed in Europe. The company assures users that there is no tracking, no background data gathering, and no hidden analytics. Although Android apps are supported, users can also opt to disable Google services for increased privacy.

Specs:

In terms of hardware, the Jolla Phone is powered by a high-performance MediaTek chipset, features 12GB RAM, and comes with 256GB of storage—expandable via microSD card. The display is a 6.36-inch FullHD AMOLED panel with a pixel density of 390 ppi and is protected by Gorilla Glass.

On the camera front, the primary rear shooter features a 50MP sensor and a 13MP wide-angle lens. Details about the front-facing camera are yet to be shared.

The device is fitted with a robust, replaceable 5,500 mAh battery, and the back cover can also be swapped out. At launch, covers will be offered in three colours: Snow White, Kaamos Black, and The Orange.

Additional highlights include a side-mounted fingerprint reader, NFC, 5G, dual-SIM capability, and—marking a distinguishing feature—an actual physical privacy switch. This hardware lets users disconnect the microphone, camera, Bluetooth, and more with a simple flick, offering assurance for those who value security.

Jolla promises at least five years of OS support for the device. However, some specifications may be tweaked before full-scale production begins. The catch? Manufacturing will only proceed if 2,000 pre-orders are secured by January 4, 2026. At last update, more than 1,200 units had been reserved, making the production target seem attainable.

Pricing:

Interested buyers can pre-order the Jolla Phone with a €99 deposit via the official website. The expected retail price is €499 for early backers, though the standard cost is projected between €599 and €699. Early supporters who reserve a device will also receive a special edition back cover as a gesture of thanks. If the 2,000-unit target is not met, pre-order payments will be fully refunded.

Shipping is scheduled for the end of the first half of 2026, with initial availability across the UK, Norway, Switzerland, and the EU. Jolla plans to roll out the phone in additional countries depending on the level of interest. The device is also designed to function smoothly outside Europe, broadening its potential user base.

Jolla, with this launch, not only offers a new device, but also a renewed promise of user control, genuine privacy, and support for open-source innovation.
