It wouldn’t be a keynote in 2025 without much AI talk, and Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference keynote didn’t disappoint. As you can see, Apple Intelligence has received some new features, but don’t expect a smarter Siri, which was promised a year ago.
It’s great to see Apple finally catching up to the competition with Live Translation. With its integration into Messages, FaceTime, and the Phone app, its models run entirely on the device. The feature will translate messages into messages, but interestingly, it will also add live captions to FaceTime conversations. It will only use a voice when you are on a phone call.
With Genmoji, you can mix and match emojis and descriptions to make something new. You can even adjust stuff like hairstyles after the fact to match your family and friends’ latest looks. Visual Intelligence, Siri, Image Playground, and Writing Tools now integrate ChatGPT.
ChatGPT can take action on anything you see on your screen, so you can ask questions about what you’re looking at. In addition, you can search Google or ask Etsy and other apps that support search. When you view an event, it suggests adding it to your calendar, extracting the date, time, and location. Take a screenshot – alongside the options to save and share, you’ll also see one that lets you explore more with Visual Intelligence.
The addition of intelligent actions made shortcuts smarter and more powerful. In Apple’s example, a student can create a shortcut to compare an audio transcription of a lecture with the notes they took, and add any key points they missed. You can also engage with ChatGPT here, but Apple’s models are the default.
In Reminders, you can identify and categorise the most relevant actions within an email, website, or other content. With Apple Wallet, you can locate and summarise order tracking information across your orders from emails that merchants and delivery carriers sent. In Messages, you can create polls and suggest them when necessary.
Workout Buddy, powered by Apple Intelligence, is a feature on the Apple Watch (when Bluetooth headphones are used). The feature collects data from your workout and fitness history, such as heart rate, pace, distance, Activity rings, and personal milestones, and generates personalised, motivational insights during workout sessions. This new text-to-speech model uses voice data from Fitness+ trainers to provide a voice with the right energy, style, and tone.
An English version will first be available for outdoor and indoor running, indoor walking, outdoor cycling, and functional training.
