Redmi’s compact flagship tablet is apparently getting a follow-up sooner rather than later. A new report from China claims that development of the Redmi K Pad 2 is already underway and that the device is targeting a launch window before the end of June.

According to the leak, the K Pad 2 will retain the same 8.8-inch LCD panel as its predecessor, including a 165 Hz refresh rate and a 1880 x 3008 px resolution. In other words, Redmi seems to be sticking with the winning display formula from the original K Pad.

Under the hood, however, there will be some notable upgrades. The new tablet is said to run on MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500 chipset, stepping up from the Dimensity 9400+ used in the first K Pad. The battery capacity is also reportedly increasing from 7,500 mAh to 9,000 mAh, which should translate into noticeably longer endurance.

The leak further mentions that the K Pad 2 will feature dual X-axis vibration motors for more precise haptics. Audio is another area getting attention: Redmi is allegedly equipping the tablet with enhanced symmetrical dual speakers, and these may carry Bose branding, similar to what we saw on the Redmi K90 Pro Max. There’s no word, though, about any sort of subwoofer implementation for this tablet.

The original Redmi K Pad eventually made its way to some international markets under the name Xiaomi Pad Mini. Given that, it’s reasonable to expect that the Redmi K Pad 2 will also be sold outside of China as the Xiaomi Pad Mini 2, following the same branding strategy.

The information currently comes from Chinese sources, and as with any early leak, details could still change before launch.
