The iPhone 17 family has been rumoured to have 120Hz displays for a while, but this does not necessarily mean ProMotion. The assumption was reasonable since all Apple displays with more than 60Hz refresh rate have been branded “ProMotion.”
On the iPhone 13 Pro, ProMotion offers a wide range of refresh rates, ranging from 10Hz to 120Hz. With the iPhone 14 Pro, the lower limit was lowered to 1Hz.
There are only a few high-refresh-rate displays available, including 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz. The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air are likely to follow this same path. The iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max should have LTPO panels set below 60Hz to save power on static content, which is especially useful in Always-On Display mode. AOD isn’t available on non-Pro iPhones, and it’s unclear whether that will change with the 17-series.
Some mid-range phones use LTPO, and the price isn’t that high. It’s good that Apple is ready to leave 60Hz displays behind. It’s unclear whether the iPhone 17e will be included in the 120Hz upgrade. A new “e” phone will be released in early 2026.
