Samsung last introduced a form factor innovation in its foldable series in 2020 with the Galaxy Z Flip. Since then, the clamshell foldable has been complemented by the book-style Galaxy Z Fold foldables.
In 2025, Samsung may finally be able to go beyond these form factors, something it has yet to do over the last year. During its Q1 2025 earnings call today, the company dropped a significant hint that its tri-fold phone might be released this year.
For years, it has been rumoured that Samsung will adopt the tri-fold form factor for its foldable devices. As part of a lineup of upcoming devices, the company listed what appeared to be a tri-fold phone earlier this year.
During the conference call, Samsung said that it would “maximise product competitiveness based on form factor innovation.” According to the company, competitiveness will be improved by focusing on portability and performance, while Galaxy AI will be optimised for foldables to enhance the user experience.
“There will be large-screen experiences for Fold” may also hint at the expected 9.9-inch display of the tri-fold device. In addition, it is essential to ensure that new form factors are usable in real-life scenarios,” said the company.
The tri-fold device would not be considered “form factor innovation” if there weren’t a hint here about it. The Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip can hardly be called form factor innovations, just as the Galaxy S Ultra cannot be called a form factor innovation either. Samsung may launch its tri-fold device before the end of the year, possibly called the Galaxy G Fold.
