Just four months after surpassing the 200W threshold, Redmi announced 300W fast-charging technology. Xiaomi’s subsidiary revealed that a phone can charge from 0 to 100% in under five minutes, followed by a video that shed more light on the technology.

A modified Redmi Note 12 Discovery smartphone with a 4,100 mAh battery was used in a controlled environment (the original model has a dual 4,300 mAh cell). In just over five minutes, the battery reached 100%. The device reached 50% in 2 minutes 11 seconds.

Even if the video comes straight from Redmi’s Weibo account, the 300W claim falls short. During the charging process, the phone reaches 290W for about three seconds before returning to less powerful (but still impressive) rates – 300W is the maximum power the charger and battery can produce, but the device is capping out for safety reasons.

According to Redmi, the adapter has “more than 50 safety protections” while still remaining small due to Double GaN technology. We don’t yet know when Xiaomi will release a smartphone with the technology on the open market.
