Samsung’s large-screen Fold series has been stuck in a bit of a rut when it comes to battery capacity. Ever since the Galaxy Z Fold3 arrived in 2021, the line has consistently shipped with a 4,400 mAh cell. Ironically, the older Galaxy Z Fold2 from 2020 actually had a slightly larger 4,500 mAh battery.

In the meantime, Chinese foldable makers have been pushing much bigger batteries into similarly sized devices, making Samsung’s persistence with 4,400 mAh look increasingly outdated. That may finally be about to change.

Galaxy Z Fold8

A new leak suggests the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold8, expected later this year, will see a welcome bump in battery capacity. The upgrade won’t be dramatic, but it’s meaningful. Internally, the Fold8 is said to use a dual-cell setup with rated capacities of 2,369 mAh and 2,485 mAh. Combined, that gives a total rated capacity of 4,854 mAh, which manufacturers generally round up and advertise as a typical 5,000 mAh battery.

That puts the Fold8 on par with the Galaxy S26 Ultra in terms of stated capacity. A 5,000 mAh pack is hardly groundbreaking in 2026, but for Samsung’s book-style foldable it represents nearly a 14% jump over the 4,400 mAh units used since the Fold3. It still won’t catch the largest batteries found in some competing Chinese foldables, yet it’s a notable step forward for Samsung’s design.

Alongside the standard Fold8, Samsung is also rumoured to be preparing a second book-style foldable—a so‑called “wide Fold”. This model is reportedly designed to compete more directly with Apple’s long-rumoured iPhone Fold, adopting a similar broader form factor. According to the same rumor, this wider Fold variant will feature a 4,900 mAh battery, slightly below the Fold8’s 5,000 mAh typical rating but still larger than what Samsung has used in past Fold generations.

Both the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the new wide Fold are expected to be unveiled around July, assuming Samsung sticks to its usual mid-year foldable launch window.
