With the launch of Instagram’s Map feature in India, users can share their last active location with friends and explore location-tagged content. Several improvements have been made to clarity and user experience following the update’s global introduction in August.

Instagram Map lets users share their last active location with selected friends or groups.

  • Users can customise their sharing preferences by selecting specific people, disabling sharing in certain areas, or turning it off completely.

  • When location sharing is enabled on supervised teen accounts, parents receive a notification and can manage permissions.

Friends and creators can also explore location-tagged Reels, Stories, Notes, and Posts. Shared content on the Map remains visible for 24 hours and can be accessed through the DM inbox.

As part of its India launch, Instagram has introduced several refinements to make location sharing easier and more intuitive:

  • On the map, a persistent indicator shows whether location sharing is on or off.

  • In the Notes tray, a secondary indicator shows when the user is not sharing their location.

  • We have removed profile photos from over-tagged content to avoid the assumption that they represent someone’s real location.

  • Location tags now place stories, reels, and posts on the Map once they are added.

  • Tagged content can be previewed before publishing, increasing transparency.
