According to ETNews, the iPhone 17 lineup may ditch the refresh rate gap between Pro and standard models. All iPhone 17 variants, including the base model and the rumoured iPhone 17 Air/Slim, could feature 120Hz ProMotion displays with LTPO.
ProMotion displays had previously been exclusive to iPhone 13 Pro models, leaving standard models at 60Hz, which was less fluid. Apple’s move may reduce the gap between iPhone tiers and make base models more competitive against feature-rich Android flagships that have adopted high refresh rates.
Significantly, the iPhone 17 series includes LTPO displays. A variable refresh rate is possible with LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide), which allows the display to adjust its refresh rate according to the content. The result is a smoother experience while conserving battery life. It is even possible for ProMotion displays to drop down to 1Hz on iPhone 14 Pro models.
The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air may go as low as 1Hz, but the jump to 120Hz represents a significant leap for standard iPhones. Users who prioritize smooth and responsive experiences may be attracted to them as a result.
According to reports, Samsung and LG will be Apple’s exclusive suppliers of LTPO displays, keeping the technology in the hands of established partners.
Apple has recently narrowed the gap between its Pro and standard iPhones through this shift in display technology. The iPhone 16 base model is a compelling option with the smallest feature disparity ever. Apple could eliminate a key advantage of the Pro models by including ProMotion displays.
With the iPhone 17 series, analysts like Ross Young have hinted that non-Pro iPhones may receive 120Hz panels. According to the latest report from ETNews, this rumour supports the possibility of a major display upgrade for all iPhone 17 models.
