Next month, Google I/O will be held, and rumors are beginning to swirl about the upcoming Pixel devices, including the foldable. According to Android Authority’s latest report, the Pixel Fold 2 is going to be called the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
There is a lot of logic behind this new name. Google has been rumored to be aiming for the fall release of the Fold instead of the summer. The Pixel 9 will come with a new chipset, as Google does every year.
Taking that into consideration, adding the Fold to the Pixel 9 family also makes sense. For consumers, it will be more convenient to keep everything under one name. It should also mean the Fold will be treated as a proper flagship phone, something the original Pixel Fold wasn’t.
This will also be the fourth Pixel 9 model that launches this fall, according to Android Authority. The Pixel 9 is codenamed “tokay”, the Pixel 9 Pro is codenamed “caiman”, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is codenamed “komodo”, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is codenamed “comet”.
According to the report, Google had been referring to “comet” as “Pixel Fold 2” until recently. The marketing team probably thought this name fit better with the new release schedule. However, this may not be the final name.
