As part of his Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman shares some more details about upcoming software changes in iOS 18 for the iPhone.

According to Gurman, iOS 18 will include updates to most of the popular iPhone apps, including the Photos, Mail, Notes, and Fitness apps. New features will be added to the Calculator app, and the app will be available for the first time on the iPad.

The iOS 18 update has been described as one of the most significant updates to iPhone software in history. There will be new features across the OS. Apple Maps, for example, will soon have new features.

Gurman also says that the iPhone home screen will receive some new features. For the first time, users will be able to place icons freely without aligning them to a grid.

The overall OS will get a bit of a facelift, with Gurman expecting minor design tweaks, although nothing as dramatic as the iOS 17 transition. It will be easier to update and customize the app designs because of the new design changes.

There is speculation that Apple is attempting to standardize the library of UI components that it uses across its apps. This will make it easier for engineers to keep them up to date, particularly as they become increasingly available as universal apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, tvOS, and visionOS.
