Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple will unveil a new artificial intelligence feature in iOS 18 that will auto-summarize notifications. Gurman provided more details about Apple’s first major move into generative AI in his “Power On” newsletter today.
The company’s “proactive intelligence” approach will improve Siri’s voice capabilities, giving it a more conversational feel, and add features aimed at helping users with their everyday lives.
The service includes auto-summarizing your iPhone notifications, summing up news articles and transcribing voice memos, as well as improving existing features, such as auto-populating your calendar and suggesting apps. Photos will also be enhanced with AI-based editing, but none of those features will impress those who have been using AI in Adobe Inc.’s apps for a while.
According to Gurman, Apple will use on-device processing to support its AI features, but will also deliver them via the cloud in data centers with Apple silicon chips. In addition, he noted that Apple’s AI features will not include a ChatGPT-like chatbot. It is reported that Apple executives are “playing catch-up” internally.
On June 10, Apple is expected to reveal a preview of its next-generation software updates, including Apple’s first foray into AI.
