At MWC 2024, Qualcomm’s Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), Don McGuire, made an interesting announcement. Qualcomm is preparing to unveil the Snapdragon Gen 4 SoC with its own ‘Oryon’ CPU, which makes the mobile silicon space even more interesting.

According to Don, Qualcomm will unveil its flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC at its Snapdragon Summit in October 2024. Moreover, he urged people to embrace AI and commented that it won’t replace humans anytime soon. AI will function as the second brain and the sixth sense, according to him.

At the moment, Qualcomm uses ARM-based CPU cores for all of its processors, and switching to custom CPU cores would give a competitive edge and would compete with Apple’s chipsets. The upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset should also have an improved neural processing unit (NPU).

It has a combination of 2+6 cores, eliminating efficiency cores. To reduce power consumption, the chipset is expected to use TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process. This will help to reduce the need for efficient cores.

According to current rumors, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will run at 4GHz instead of 3.30GHz like its predecessor and will compete with Apple’s M3.
